Wireless charging has come a long way. Magnetic chargers now snap into place, line up perfectly and charge your phone, watch and earbuds at the same time. Here's what you need to know before you buy.
Qi, MagSafe and Qi2: what's the difference?
- Qi is the universal wireless charging standard. Almost every recent iPhone and Android phone supports it. You place the phone on a pad, and alignment matters.
- MagSafe adds a ring of magnets (iPhone 12 and newer) so the phone snaps into the right spot every time. It's great on stands, in cars and on power banks.
- Qi2 brings the same magnetic idea to more phones, so magnetic chargers work across more brands.
Using an Android phone or a case? A thin magnetic ring sticker or a MagSafe-compatible case lets most phones work with magnetic chargers too.
Which type of charger suits you?
- Flat pad: simple and slim, good for a nightstand.
- 3-in-1 stand: phone, Apple Watch and AirPods in one spot, with no cable clutter.
- Magnetic car mount with charging: holds the phone for navigation and keeps it charged on the road.
- Magnetic power bank: wireless top-ups in your pocket, with nothing to plug in.
Tips for faster, cooler charging
- Use the wall adapter recommended for your charger (usually a 20W+ USB-C PD plug). A weak adapter is the most common cause of slow wireless charging.
- Take off thick or metal cases, or switch to a MagSafe-compatible case.
- Keep cards and keys away from magnetic chargers.
- A little warmth is normal. If your phone gets hot, take it off, let it cool, and check the adapter.
